How did you get into yoga?
I first started maybe 16 years ago as a way to maintain flexibility and build strength without impact. I really enjoyed it but stopped a few years later when I had my daughter. I always intended to return but like most women can appreciate, “mum life” and the desire to maintain my career took priority.
How did you find Yoga Flourish?
I’d been looking for a studio that wasn’t too far from home or work but offered a variety of classes at convenient times. I remember driving past one day and seeing the flags! I got a little excited and jumped straight online to find out more.
What were your first impressions of Yoga Flourish when you came by?
An immediate sense of “this is the one”. Met with a warm greeting, offers of props if needed, the colours in the studio, the lighting ambience, the kind and calming energy in the room from complete strangers.
Could you please share your experience of what effect Yoga has had on your life, health of body and mind. How has Yoga made you feel?
I’ve evolved through my Yoga journey. When I first started, all I wanted out of it was purely physical – strength and flexibility. It’s now so much more for me. It’s about grounding and connecting with myself. Applying the principles in everything I do – breathing with movement, positive affirmations to be kind to myself or finding something simple to be appreciative for. Meditating to find calmness during a busy day, even if it’s for 30 seconds. Accepting that I can’t control the actions of others but I can control my reaction. I still have an acid tongue, but I’m much better at controlling that than I used to be!
Anything further you would like to share about an individual teacher or anything you think new student would like to know as they too can be quite nervous as they start their journeys?
For new students – this studio isn’t about designer outfits, supermodel bodies and social media posts. It’s real people, comfy clothes, all ages, shapes, sizes and colours. No judgement, no fear and always variations whatever your level. Some days you’ll feel like all you can manage is laying on the floor for the whole session. And that’s okay. You showed up.
I’ve enjoyed every teacher at YF. You all bring something unique to each practice, so even if it’s the same class style, I’ve learned something different – whether it’s a new pose, a variation or perspective, your energy is always positive and engaging. I’m grateful for all of you!
